The Postal Van of Throttle Hollow
Three-quarter miles up the Kettledrae Pass, the storm hits without warning. Sprocket, a battered postal van with one good headlight and a body held together by rust and stubbornness, finds herself sliding toward the edge of a mountain road that was already more ice than asphalt. She has made this run through Throttle Hollow for years, hauling parcels, letters, and the secrets of a community whose people go by names like Tinker, Diesel, Gasket, Rusty, Piston, Forge, and Bolt. Tonight, the wiper blade is frozen, the mirrors are fogged, and something stowed behind the seats is worth the risk of never delivering the regular mail again. Back in the hollow, a message has gone out over the two-way: the old mine road is open, and anyone who knows the mountain is welcome to come. But nobody can reach the valley until someone brings the news down. And the only one still running tonight is Sprocket. Through switchback after switchback, with Pip's voice crackling on the radio and Crema's last repair job groaning under the strain, Sprocket wrestles the steering column through white sheets of rain. The mail is heavy. The dark is heavier. And somewhere in the cabin, among the letters and parcels, a single envelope marked for Salvage could change the shape of the valley forever, while another, addressed to Grudge, threatens to bury the past. The pass doesn't wait. The ice doesn't forgive. And the postal van of Throttle Hollow has one last delivery to make before the mountain closes for good.
