Where the Old Cars Go
The brass key was cold, but Wren Calloway could still feel the ghost of her grandfather's thumb in its grooves, sixty years of the same ritual, the same rusted gate at Hollow Creek, the same valley drowned in pewter and rose before the mist lifted enough to show what remained. What remained was less. The Calloway's Carriage collection, once a valley-spanning treasury of vintage and antique machinery, is leaking: engines sold to private buyers, chassis hauled to auction houses in cities that care nothing for the smell of old gear oil, bodies rusting in the fog while the ledger bleeds red. Wren has inherited the gate, the debt, and a family that will not let her decide alone. Her sister Mira wants the collection liquidated and the proceeds split; Della Moss, the estate's aging archivist, guards the records like reliquaries and will hand Wren nothing; Harlan Bunt, a restoration engineer with a past at Calloway's who was let go mid-job, keeps showing up at the gate with tools and a grudge. Beatrice and the Quill brothers, Jasper the pragmatic, Aldo the sentimental, hold stakes in the remaining chassis they will not surrender. Felix Bright, a buyer who deals in salvage opportunity, has been circling the valley for weeks, and Cora Pell, the county's preservation officer, is the only voice wanting the cars to stay exactly where they are. None of them are wrong. All of them want a different where for the machines. And the gate is open. What Wren turns the key toward, preservation, sale, restoration, or surrender, decides whether Calloway's Carriage becomes a landmark, a liquidation, or just another name on a road nobody drives anymore.
