The Thornveil Compact

by Luna Calder

The tincture tastes like grief, and Kaelen Voss has been drinking it every dawn for three years. On the Greymarch road, hauling salt crates in the bitter cold, she counts the wheel-turns and the breaths between, the only math that keeps the thornveil from splitting open inside her chest. The compact that bound her to it was made by Queen Elara, sealed by Archmage Ysara, and enforced by Lord Seren Ashford: a triad of power that has kept the veil dormant long enough for the kingdom to forget what happens when it wakes. But the tincture is running thin. The salt route is being rerouted. And Theron Wraith has been asking questions at the keep's gates that no one is answering. What Kaelen doesn't know, what no one in the triad will tell her, is that the compact carries a second clause, one that was never read aloud. A clause that doesn't bind the veil. It binds Kaelen to it. And the clause activates the moment she reaches Thornveil Keep at the road's end. Along the way, a quiet scholar named Pell keeps a ledger of everything Kaelen forgets. Mira Dorne runs the only tavern where the tincture formula is written down. Bex drives the cart with three of four hands, counting knots in the reins. Each of them is a clause. Each of them is a witness. And when the second clause finally surfaces, none of them can unsee what they've signed. The road ends at Thornveil Keep. Queen Elara will be there. Lord Seren will argue. Archmage Ysara will cast. And Kaelen Voss will have to decide: seal the compact and lose the thorns forever, or tear it open, release the veil into the world, and become the thing she's been swallowing every dawn to stay human. The salt crates scrape. The wheels turn. The tincture burns. And the compact is waiting.
