Cindervow
The hammer fell at 0542, cycle one of a new day, and Seren Ashvael heard in its resonance the shape of the blade she had spent eleven days coaxing from cinder-loyal steel. The Northern Concord's last ceremonial sword cannot be forged twice, and the cycle will close before sunrise, but Seren is not the only one who remembers what the alloy remembers. In the months before the final hammerfall, she has shaped and reshaped the steel through forty-three nights of grinding, annealing, and re-grinding. Her brother Theron lingers as a residual warmth at the anvil's edge. Maren, lost, loved, never fully gone, appears in the curve of the metal and in the silence between strikes. Cael Dornmark stands at the threshold of the forge with terms Seren does not want to hear. And Voss watches from the upper gantry, observing what the smith has tried to keep private. The Concord requires a blade that will hold a vow. Seren must decide whose vow it carries, and what she is willing to leave inside the steel before the last hammer falls. Once the resonance settles into the metal, it cannot be coaxed out again. What she forges now will outlive her. What she refuses to forge will outlast the Concord.
