The Hollow Atlas

When Liora scrubs the violet-blue ink from her knuckles after finishing her twentieth coastline map of the season, she does not yet know that the realm's atlas has been emptied , nor that she is the last hand still willing to draw one. For generations, the great library held every road, harbor, and shore in its margins, copied by a hundred apprentices under the speaking voice of the realm itself. Then the pages began to come away blank. The apprentices fled. Master Grenn, who once taught Liora the weight of a coastline, sends word through Old Tomas the binder: come back to the hollow atlas, and finish what was started. Councilor Maren Dulse denies the disappearance. Pell Korrin, who knew the library before its silence, offers no comfort. A clerk from the Harbor Authority arrives with sealed questions; the silent ferryman at the crossing will not carry Liora home until she has named what she has seen. Seren Vael appears in vision, unmapped. Rowan Vael is missing entirely. Inside the empty library, the ink still answers Liora's brush , but the maps she draws vanish overnight, and the realm keeps asking her, in a voice grown hoarse, where its own shores have gone. Liora must choose: to redraw a world the Council will bury, or to let the last coastline of the realm dissolve into her washbasin, unrecorded and unremembered.
