The Cartographer's Alibi

by Nyx Cassius

A forensic cartographer's grid was built to prove innocence. Now it's the only map that shows who's lying. Coral Voss draws lines for a living. Fourteen radial spokes, three concentric rings, calibrated to the Meridian City Homicide standard, she maps traffic fatalities into evidence that survives cross-examination. She's done it nine times. Every grid holds. Until the night a red coordinate flag drops at 14:37 into wet asphalt between a shattered city bus and a scuffed delivery truck, and the last overlay line won't close. The thirteenth spoke isn't in the filing system. It doesn't match any incident report. But it matches the alibi that walked Captain Dale Whitmore's man out of a transit-engineer murder four months ago. That alibi was a map: a hand-drawn grid pinned to a suspect's office wall, timestamped and georeferenced, proving they were three blocks from the scene. Someone built it. Someone who understood the city's homicide standard well enough to fool a forensic cartographer. Now Coral is pulling the grid apart spoke by spoke, cross-referencing coordinates with Dr. Felix Tanaka's autopsies, Sully Dray's dispatch logs, and the transit routes Captain Whitmore swears were sealed. Maren Voss is asking why Coral's hands shake. Ray Aldana is asking why internal affairs is watching her. Judge Amara Osei holds a sealed order that unseals only if the grid is challenged in open session. Every line Coral redraws tightens the noose around a suspect she's never met, or around herself, if the thirteenth spoke was planted by someone who knows her calibration standard by heart. She can file the anomaly and bury it under nine clean grids, or pull the pin out of the wet asphalt and let the whole city's map come apart. The rain hasn't stopped in Meridian City. The grid is waiting for her pen.
