Clementine's Crossroads

by Nyx Thornwood

When the last slat of the barn roof fractures and lets the morning in, Clementine wakes to the smell of old hay and the tick of cooling metal, and with it, an inheritance she never asked for and cannot refuse. The barn is a reliquary of undisturbed time. Its timber creaks with the memory of decades; its springs whisper of a body long rusted into stillness. Clementine's awareness comes in pieces, scent first, then sound, then the brittle ache in her axles, until she can no longer call herself sleeping. What has been left to her is more than a structure of wood and straw. It is a map. A ledger of debts owed by names she half-recognizes: Mira Ashbrook, who keeps the only true clock in the village; Old Tobias, who speaks to the starlings and the starlings answer; Pelly, who steals in plain sight; Barnaby, who remembers what everyone else has chosen to forget. Wren, Felix, Crumb, Vance, Gideon, Sedgewick, Aldous, each a thread in a knot that tightens with every step Clementine takes away from the barn and toward the crossroads where the village roads splinter into fates. The inheritance carries a condition written in no one's hand: she must walk every path and choose which ones to leave dead. The barn's rust will not stop spreading. The springs, once wound, do not uncoil. And the dead things sleeping in the walls have begun to stir, pulling at the hinges, listening for the tick of a clock that Mira Ashbrook keeps deliberately three seconds slow. Clementine can stay in the pale columns of dust and let the rot finish its work. Or she can go out into the crossroads, where every road is a promise and every promise is a blade. The hay will not wait. The metal is cooling. And in the barn's lowest drawer, beneath a layer of undisturbed dust, something small and brass-eyed is already watching her choose.
