Found on Route Seven

by Vane Brennor

Pipworth Hazelton has spent three winters minding Cooper's Salvage Yard, a forgotten stretch of rust and bramble tucked along Route Seven, and he likes it that way. The yard keeps its own time. The town keeps its own secrets. Pipworth keeps to himself , until the morning ivy begins crawling across his mirror and a stranger's leather valise turns up wedged beneath the chassis of a '52 Chevrolet nobody remembers towing in. The valise has no owner the mayor will name. Its contents , a photograph, a ledger in a hand none of the old families recognize, a single pressed leaf , seem to stir something restless in the townsfolk. Widow Threadwhistle stops speaking to the postman. Esmeralda Tinkerton begins leaving cryptic bundles on Pipworth's doorstep. Mayor Quintus Hollow, who has run Route Seven with a velvet grip for as long as anyone can recall, starts asking questions he has no business asking. With only the loyal dog Grizzle, the prickly Barnaby Quill, and his own reluctant curiosity for company, Pipworth begins to piece together a story the town has spent decades dismantling. Each answer pulls at a thread that leads deeper into the valley , to the abandoned fairgrounds at Tomlin's Crossing, to Lady Willowick's shuttered estate, to a night long ago when something valuable vanished and someone paid for it. Now Route Seven is waking up. The salvage yard is emptying itself. And Pipworth must choose: return what he found to the earth, or watch the town he calls home finally face what it buried.
