Sweetness at the Bottom of the Well

Grumble arrives in a village at half past four on an afternoon that has already begun to curdle. The bus rattles down a lane bordered by hawthorn and bramble, the clock tower ticking a pulse slower than the rest of the country, and the cottage at the end of the path smells of cinnamon and something the nose cannot quite name. Old Fenwick has been waiting. Maren Thistle has been waiting. Everyone in the village has been waiting, though they would not say so aloud, because what waits with them is older than any of them and far less patient. At the center of the lane stands a stone well. If a traveler leans close, a voice drifts up from the dark , a woman named Elspeth, singing in a sweetness so cloying it coats the tongue. The village has made its arrangements with her across generations. The well is fed. The well is quieted. And in return, the sweetness holds the village in place, unchanging, unmourning, unbothered by the century turning outside its hedgerows. Now Petra's child, Little Senn, has begun to hear Elspeth sing. Hedgewick keeps his warnings close to his chest. Maren Thistle will not meet Grumble's eyes. And Grumble, who came only to visit, is being asked to decide what kind of place deserves to be saved , and whether the climb out of the well is something the living are still permitted to make.
