Many registrars advertise $0.99 or $5.99 registrations for year 1, but subsequently charge $16.99 to $24.99 per year upon renewal. Over a 3- to 5-year registration horizon, loss-leader promo domains often cost 40% to 100% more in total than buying from a flat-rate wholesale registrar.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) levies a flat $0.18 annual fee per registered generic top-level domain (gTLD). Some registrars absorb this fee inside their advertised rates, while others tack it on as a separate line item at checkout.

Under GDPR and ICANN Temporary Specification, personal registration data is masked by default in Europe and by many modern registries worldwide. Reputable modern registrars include WHOIS Privacy Protection completely free for lifetime. Charging $10–$15/year for WHOIS privacy is an outdated upselling practice.

When you transfer a domain to a new registrar, ICANN regulations require that the transfer includes a mandatory 1-year registration extension. The transfer fee is typically equivalent to one annual renewal, resetting your renewal cadence with the new provider.
