Pricing report · 2026-08-24
We priced the observability market on three workloads so you don't have to
Same workloads, same rules, every vendor. At enterprise scale, the spread between the cheapest vendor and Datadog is 27.6×, and that gap is the reason bill-shock protection matters before signing an annual contract.
Why another observability comparison
Most observability comparisons are product-feature matrices copied from marketing pages. Almost none of them tell you what a workload will actually cost, because pricing pages are full of per-host floors, per-GB ingest rates, per-million-event index rates, and retention-window multipliers that quietly multiply the bill by 5–10× the headline price.
We maintain a live comparison tool backed by a catalog of 12 observability vendors whose rates are hand-captured from official pricing pages and public APIs. 7 of them carry a priceCaptured stamp. This report runs all of them through three fixed cost-model workloads and reports USD-normalized monthly estimates. These are cost-model scenarios, not measured performance benchmarks: no latency, throughput, or availability equivalence was tested. Vendors that bill by quote rather than per-GB (e.g. quote-only platforms) are excluded from the ranked tables.
The headline finding
At the mid-size workload (10 GB/day · 30 days · 10 hosts), the priced vendors span $25.00/mo to $690.40/mo. Datadog anchors the high end at $690.40/mo. That's a 27.6× difference at identical ingest, retention and host counts, driven by three patterns that show up across the whole market:
- Per-host floors (Datadog, New Relic, Dynatrace) bill for every monitored host, so a 10-host shop pays $150–500/mo before any ingest.
- Usage-only (Grafana Cloud, Honeycomb) bills only for what you send, with no host floor.
- Bundle / flat-tier (Axiom, Better Stack) caps the bill at a flat monthly rate, so 1 GB and 100 GB land in the same price band.
At small-team scale the spread is more compressed (narrow) because Datadog's per-host floor hasn't compounded yet. At large scale the spread widens (63.4×) and Datadog's bill climbs to $17104.00/mo.

Method & honesty notes
- Rates captured from official pricing pages / public APIs; capture date recorded per vendor row (
capturedAt). - Quote-based platforms (no public $/GB rate) are excluded from the ranked tables, not artificially forced onto the chart.
- Mixed-currency vendors are FX-converted to USD via the shared
fx.tsprovenance (USD/EUR/GBP); a future non-USD row would still rank at its USD-equivalent. - Region filter: every workload is region-agnostic — observability prices are mostly region-independent, unlike the VPS or storage markets.
- Originally published 2026-08-24; calculations use the catalog bundled with the current build, whose full-verification date is 2026-08-27. This is not an immutable archive of August prices. A code or prose update is not a new price verification. Consult the capture dates and provider sources below; neither this page nor the live tool guarantees today's quote.

FAQ
- Why is Datadog so expensive?
- Datadog charges separately for ingestion ($0.10/GB), log indexing ($1.06–2.50 per million events by retention window; ingest-only logs are not searchable), and infrastructure hosts ($15+/host/month). At 10 GB/day with 30-day retention and 10 hosts, list pricing adds up to roughly $690/month before any other product.
- Which observability vendor is the cheapest at SMB scale?
- Axiom sits around $25/mo at 10 GB/day · 30-day retention · 10 hosts, an order of magnitude under Datadog. Better Stack is similar. The full ranked table is below; the cheapest row varies by workload and is recomputed from the catalog on every build.
- What happens at enterprise scale?
- The Datadog bill climbs roughly linearly with ingest and host count. At 100 GB/day ingested (the large workload), Datadog's per-month bill is multiple thousand USD; cheaper vendors stay an order of magnitude lower. The mid and large tables below show the live numbers.
- What is bill-shock protection?
- A bill-shock input lets you pin a specific workload (e.g. 10 GB/day · 30 days · 10 hosts) and see the exact list-price cost. The same input runs on every vendor so the comparison is apples-to-apples. Vendors without a public $/GB rate do not get quoted.
- Do any of these vendors have free tiers?
- Yes. Axiom and Better Stack both have generous free tiers that cover the small-team workload entirely. Open the small-team table below to see the $0 rows. The catalog retains priceCaptured:false rows for free-tier-only vendors but the ranking only includes priced rows.
- How do I export this data?
- Every figure on this page is recomputed from obsl-catalog.json. The machine-readable copies are at /tools/observability-compare/data.csv and /tools/observability-compare/data.json, and the price-change register is at /tools/observability-compare/register.csv. Re-check capture dates if a quote looks stale.
